What Is Asbestosis?

Asbestosis is fibrosis of the lungs caused by prolonged heavy exposure to asbestos, such as in industries such as construction, asbestos mining or ship building. Asbestosis affects the tissue of the lungs and causes chronic inflammation. Those with asbestosis suffer from sever dyspnea (shortness of breath) and are at an increased risk of contracting lung cancer and mesothelioma in the future.

Asbestosis can sometimes become confused with other asbestos related diseases, although it can be linked to Lung Cancer and Pleural thickening.

The Symptoms Of Asbestosis?

The symptoms of asbestosis include:

  • Shortness of Breath
    • A Persistent Cough
    • Wheezing
    • Fatigue
    • Chest Pain
    • Swollen Fingertips

The primary symptom of asbestosis, however, is the slow onset of shortness of breath. In more advanced and severe cases it can cause respiratory failure. Asbestosis sufferers in more advanced cases often require oxygen therapy.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and have yet to be diagnosed with asbestosis, we recommend you visit your GP as soon as possible who will be in a position to discuss your symptoms with you and offer a thorough diagnosis.

    Diagnosing Asbestosis

Asbestosis can often be difficult to diagnose given that many of the symptoms are shared with less serious conditions such as asthma and pneumonia.

The usual process for the diagnosing asbestosis includes:

    Medical Consultation

    A Chest X-Ray / CT Scan

In addition, pulmonary function tests may be carried out in order to assess how well your lungs are functioning.

    Treatment Of Asbestosis

Whilst there’s currently no available treatments to reverse asbestosis, there are a number available which can slow the progression of the disease and help to relieve symptoms.

It is common for sufferers of asbestosis to be provided with oxygen therapy where breathing difficulty is experienced. In cases where symptoms are severe, surgery may be advised.

    Those At Risk Of Asbestosis

If you worked in the following industries you may have been exposed to asbestos and, as such, be at risk of Asbestosis and may be eligible to make an asbestosis compensation claim:
